Dear Friends

21 March 2014 will mark the 9th anniversary of World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD), a day dedicated to advocating for the rights, inclusion and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome which is recognised by the United Nations and observed all over the world. The date 21.3 symbolises the triplication of chromosome 21 which is unique to people with Down syndrome.

Down Syndrome International (DSi) would like to share with you a preliminary announcement of the activities that we will be coordinating in 2014 and we hope that whether you are an individual or an organisation who advocates for people with Down syndrome, that you will get involved and join us.

For WDSD 2014, we will focus on “Health and Wellbeing – Access and Equality for All”. All people with Down syndrome have the right to access healthcare when required on an equal basis with others without discrimination and with proper assessment of the specific health needs of the individual. We hope you all agree and we welcome your adoption of this important concept into your plans for the day if you would like to join our campaign.

Our activities will include the following:

WDSD Website – World Events and Your Stories

You can register on our website www.worlddownsyndromeday.org. Once you have a username and password, you can upload details of your WDSD activities and events, including text, photo and attachment, by simply logging in and following the instructions on our World Events page. Then, after WDSD, why not post details of your events to our Your Stories page.

WDSD Global Video Event

Following the success of “Let Us In!” in 2011, 2012 and 2013, DSi will once again be producing a WDSD Global Video Event for 2014 with the help of our global network of Down syndrome advocacy organisations and contacts. Look out for the video prior to WDSD and help us share it with the world. To learn more about this event visit the DSi website www.ds-int.org/wdsd-global-video-event.

WDSD Conference 2014

Following our conferences held at the United Nations Headquarters, New York, USA on 21 March in 2012 and 2013, we will be organising an event to be held on 21 March 2014, which will feature speakers from around the world including many self-advocates. Further details, including how to register to participate or how to follow the event online, will be available soon. Please watch the WDSD website www.worlddownsyndromeday.org.

WDSD Awards

DSi will announce WDSD Awardees on 21 March 2014. The WDSD Awards are given to individuals, group or organisations whose voluntary or professional activities have strengthened and enriched the lives of people with Down syndrome. If you are a member of DSi, you can nominate a person, group or organisation. The closing date for nominations is 31 January 2014. For details of how to nominate please visit the DSi website www.ds-int.org/world-down-syndrome-day-awards.

WDSD Social Media

You can join us to create a single global voice for advocating for people with Down syndrome on 21 March on our various WDSD Social Media channels including our Facebook Fan Page, Facebook Group, Twitter and YouTube. For further information visit the DSi website www.ds-int.org/wdsd-social-media.

LOTS OF SOCKS

Wear LOTS OF SOCKS again on 21 March 2014 to raise awareness on WDSD. We want to get people talking about WDSD on 21 March, and we can do this if we all wear socks…BUT NOT JUST ANY SOCKS…brightly coloured socks, mismatched socks, long socks, printed socks, 1 sock…maybe even 3 socks (or EXTRA socks) for 3 chromosomes. Or if you don’t normally wear socks then wear them. Just so long as they are socks which are on display and people will ask you about.

AND WHY STOP AT SOCKS? Wear brightly coloured clothing if you like, say if it’s too hot for socks. The choice is yours, but we ask you to join us in wearing something which will help tell the world about WDSD.

It is easy to do, so whether you are at home, nursery, school, university, work, play, travel, holiday or anywhere, join in and invite all your friends, family and colleagues to do the same!

For 2014, socks matching the LOTS OF SOCKS logo will be available to purchase at very low cost from DSi. We encourage member organisations to contact us to purchase LOTS OF SOCKS for distribution in your location and socks will also be available to purchase online. Further details for LOTS OF SOCKS 2014 will follow very soon. Please watch the WDSD website www.worlddownsyndromeday.org.

We look forward to sharing World Down Syndrome Day with you again!

Regards

Andrew Boys
